A love letter to Recruit for Spouses

I vividly remember the moment Heledd gave me a chance – I was driving away from home having had a heated discussion with my husband about something to do with housework. She had always been someone I could talk to (given she was my neighbour she couldn’t escape me), but now she offered me work. Five hours a week to do some social media for them.

I thought she just felt sorry for me. I even offered to do it for free – since I’d been out of work for 7 years due to international postings, children and lack of opportunity – and felt like I didn’t deserve to be paid for work – especially when I wasn’t sure I could do it.

But she insisted, and so I started. I was immediately met with a group of focused, passionate women who had empathy for where I was in my career and did nothing but build me up, support me and guide me. These ladies who I had not met in the flesh but spoke to every day became the people who gave me a reason to get up in the morning (alongside having my son put the lights on at 7am).

Concurrently, I signed up to the Career Academy Coaching Programme and began a six-week professional conversation with a wonderfully patient and understanding lady from BAE Systems who pointed out that I already knew what I needed to do, I just needed to do it. It was around that time something started to ignite in me. I hadn’t felt it for a while but all of a sudden, I couldn’t wait to turn on the computer and do some work.

My husband was working away a lot during this period and we have a daughter who has special education needs which is a fight all of its own, so the juggle was real. But work provided an outlet for me – a focus on something that was just for me and it made a tangible difference to how I managed the everything else going on in my life. Soon enough I was taking on more work, more responsibilities and greater feelings of accomplishment.

All the while, I was being looked after by Heledd, who always asked how the family was before any work was discussed.  Recruit for Spouses isn’t about accolades or profits, it has always been at grass roots – about helping people like me. And helping people like you. Heledd and her team work tirelessly to campaign at the highest level but they never lose sight of the individual struggles, requirements and achievements at our level.

There was a period when I hated to go my husband’s work functions. Dreaded the question ‘so what do you do with your time?’ or not being able to engage in conversations. I even had someone ask; ‘what do you do when you’re not spending your husbands’ money’. I *think* it was a joke, but it hit at the core of how I felt.

Now, I’m happy to bore people through to the cheese course with how capable, skilled and talented military spouses are. How inspiring they are, not just because they work, but because they work, support their partners, and ingratiate themselves into new communities, time and time again, all the while keeping the family unit together. See, I am at it again!

I am not writing this encourage you to register with Recruit for Spouses, certainly if you’re not ready. But when you are, reach out. You don’t need to be ready to work; you don’t even need a CV ready to go. But you need to take the first step and the team will guide you through everything they have to offer. Not just with finding work but with building your confidence, self-belief and drive.

After two years, I am leaving Recruit for Spouses having been offered an amazing opportunity (it had to be amazing to make me leave) that I would never have been offered had it not been for Heledd taking a chance on me after my small domestic over the washing up! And I am so very sad to leave a team that has done everything to make me believe in myself, but so proud of what we have achieved so far.

And that’s what RFS does. They welcome you in with no judgement, they support and guide you and you leave on the other side as your old self – ready to take on the world.

RFS was...a platform for spouses who understood my struggles and my challenges. It felt like I came to them in pieces, deflated and very defeated and they (RFS) pieced me back together.

The competency amongst the military spouse community is unbelievably good and the fact all our candidates were happy with remote working made this ideal for us as a small business.

I found the course to be an excellent refresher of the skills I used in my previous roles, and also a confidence booster to me, proving that I can do it again
