faith, determination, engaging

Sometimes you need to take a leap of faith to find the answer.

And that is exactly what Helene Hadley did when she contacted Recruit for Spouses.  Believing remote work that fitted into her hectic military life was a pipe dream, Helene was surprised to find the solution was at Recruit for Spouses.

What is your career background?

I have worked since I was 15 years old across 5 different countries. I have worked as a Waitress, Admin Assistant, a Carer, a Trainee Shoe manager and as an Area Manager for a large supermarket.

Why did you approach recruit for spouses?

Due to our remote posting in Lossiemouth, Scotland, I was searching for work that would allow me to work from home. I wanted to be able to work from a laptop so that when my husband was posted I could continue with my job rather than having to start afresh again.

Can you tell us a bit about the process you undertook with RfS?

I emailed RFS my CV after seeing a post about RFS searching for language speakers for a work from home position. I then had a zoom call with a lady named Katy who spoke to me about the opportunity working as a Talent Acqusition Specialist with Alexander Mann Solutions.

Can you briefly explain the job you do?

When people ask me what I do I normally say I am a headhunter as I spend the majority of my time actively seeking out candidates to fill vacancies for the account I have been placed on. I have to engage with the candidates and tell them about our great company and what we can offer them if they are willing to make a career move.

What challenges did you face in the search for your new job?

I have been searching for remote work for a few years but every time I came across positions it always seemed to be a bit of a scam. They always asked you to invest up front in a product to then sell on or would make you pay for your equipment such as laptop, phone etc…

What has been your proudest moment?

I can’t say I have a proudest moment. I think I’m proud that I always find work no matter where I land. The application and interview process and can be very disheartening when you have so many applications rejected/ go unanswered or you are told you interview really well but you are either over-qualified or just have that little but less experience than the other candidate so I guess I’m proud that I just keep going and don’t give up.

Why is being in work so important for you?

I find that I get bored when I am not working. I always liked the idea of not working but the reality is I get itchy feet. Although we have made sure our outgoings will always be met on one salary, having a second income gives us more room to pay for luxuries and to make some investments.

What difference has being back in work made to you?

I am really enjoying seeing results. It’s hard when you are taking care of the home or children to measure your progress and as somebody who likes numbers, I like to be able to see it all in black and white.

As a military spouse, what has been your biggest obstacle when trying to balance work/kids/your spouses’ military commitments?

Time. My husband’s job sees him working away normally 6-8 months of the year. It’s never longer than 5 months at a time and can often just be a couple of weeks or a month or two. I found that when I am working it means that when he is in the country, we often don’t see each other as his Leave schedule is very unpredictable and we have very little notice. With previous employment it meant that I would often find myself working and unable to book time off work to coincide with him being home.

What advice would you give fellow Military spouses who want to get back into work, retrain for a new career or start their own business?

Keep trying. I had almost given up hope of being able to work remotely as there seemed to be no legitimate opportunities. I had to take a leap of faith with this job and invest upfront by taking a week away from my family and paying for a hotel, hoping there would be a job at the end of it. Fortunately, it paid off, and I’m finally in a job that I enjoy that can work around my family. As my photo suggests, I feel like I’ve got my cake and I am eating it!!

RFS was...a platform for spouses who understood my struggles and my challenges. It felt like I came to them in pieces, deflated and very defeated and they (RFS) pieced me back together.

The competency amongst the military spouse community is unbelievably good and the fact all our candidates were happy with remote working made this ideal for us as a small business.
